SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
Prof Pieragostino focused her research activity on biomarker discovery trough “Omics” approach by studying easy accessible bio-fluids. The research of interest was mainly directed towards the field of clinical proteomics, especially in characterization of the expression and post-translational modifications of proteins involved in multiple sclerosis through proteomics and metabonomics approach. This aim was pursued by techniques such as protein 2D-PAGE and principally by state of the art approaches such as multidimensional chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis, developing several biomedical applications using the following mass spectrometer instrumentation: LC-ESI Triple Quadruple MS, nanoLC-nanoESI-Q-TOF MS, MALDI-TOF-MS.
In recent years the research was mainly focused on the identification and characterization of proteins, lipids and metabolites involved in pathophysiological processes both for diagnostic purposes and pathogenic understanding, in order to dissect the biochemical process involved in the disease onset and progression. In the last years, she obtained pioneering results in the discovery of a molecular cross-talk between tears and CSF by developing a new protocol which showed Extracellular Vesicles, as proteins shuttles for such communication. The latest hit is the European project “PMSMatTrain” funded in H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018 and a new SECRETome funded in 2024. The projects aim to train more 20 MARIE-CURIE PhD students. The COVID-19 pandemic recently required a worldwide research effort, a call to which Prof. responded by publishing several papers on vaccine monitoring. Today she boasts more than 80 published
papers (44 without her PhD supervisor), 19 as main author (12 as senior, 10 as first and 13 as corresponding author). All these elements represent a clear evidence of her scientific maturity to successfully carry out the proposed project, with relapses, of certain importance, in MS.
